New Occupational Therapy service - Use of robotic pets
NEW to our program is an occupational therapy that includes the use of robotic pets, which is helping to improve hand strength and dexterity in patients.

This innovative physical rehabilitation treatment has been enhancing the patient experience at Sacred Heart Hospital.
A responsive, animated, walking, purring robotic Pleo Dinosaur has captivated patients, physicians and staff since its arrival at the hospital. The pet dinosaur is improving arm and hand strength and dexterity in patients at the hospital’s physical rehabilitation department.
“The robotic dino has been particularly helpful in improving the strength and dexterity of patients without making the exercise feel like therapy,” said Ben Johnson, Certified Therapeutic Recreational Specialist, Sacred Heart Hospital. “Our staff is very excited about the array of treatment options made possible with this innovative tool, and we look forward to developing new treatments to better serve our community.”
A study by Saint Louis University has demonstrated the connection between companion robotics and the alleviation of loneliness by those in contact. Companion robotics have the unique ability to engage patients through physical and emotional interaction. This connection not only leads to increased cognitive responses, but the establishment of physical engagement can enhance motor skills, strength and dexterity in people with reduced physical capacities.
The robotic pet responds to the way it is touched, much like a real animal. A stroke under the chin and the baby dino raises its head and stretches its neck as would a dog or cat. The dino also shows emotions such frustration or happiness, depending on the specific situation. It knows when it is upside-down, and can "see" with a small camera in its snout. It purrs like a kitten and growls like a puppy. If jostled, it growls and plays tug-of-war.
Robotics is not new to the hospital. Sacred Heart Hospital is the only hospital in the region using robotic-assisted surgery for the treatment of prostate cancer. The da Vinci® surgical system is a major technological advance that takes medicine beyond the limits of the surgeon’s hands to allow greater visualization, enhanced dexterity and precision. This technology means less blood loss, less tissue that needs to heal, greater safety, reduced infection risk and reduced recovery time and greater hope and healing for our patients.
The exploration of the benefits of robotics is important to Sacred Heart Hospital as the hospital strives to bring the newest, most innovative technologies to the region. Whether providing the only da Vinci® Surgical Robot in the region, or developing innovative methods of therapy that simultaneously heal and engage patients, Sacred Heart continues to be on the cutting edge of technological advances in healthcare.
