On November 10, 2009, Sacred Heart Hospital hosted the first Annual Producers & Buyers Co-Op meeting. Learn more about this here.

Sacred Heart Hospital is a proud partner with local farmers and River Country RC&D to link local farms with institutional buyers. On June 12, 2009, the hospital helped launch the Producers & Buyers Co-op at Breakfast in the Valley, an Eau Claire Chamber of Commerce event that drew more than 3,000 people. Sacred Heart Hospital supports the Eat Local Food Challenge. An article in Second Opinion describes the hospital's efforts to reduce frequent flier mileage on food.

Rick Beckler, the hospital's director of hospitality services, recently presented Sacred Heart Hospital's sustainability innovations at CleanMed (a global healthcare conference) and at the Catholic Health Association annual Assembly. As of March 2009, Sacred Heart Hospital purchased more than $200,000 in locally grown & processed food since last July. The hospital pledged 10% of its $2 million annual food budget to purchasing local food as part of project announced July 2008.

Over the past two years, Sacred Heart Hospital contributed more than 37,000 pounds of medical supply items valued at nearly $215,000 to the Hospital Sisters Mission Outreach Partners in Recycling Program, a medical surplus recovery and redistribution program that addresses the medical needs of people throughout the world. Sacred Heart Hospital's CEO wrote an editorial explaining how local food is good medicine for our health and our community's economy. In the editorial, he committed ten percent of the hospital's $2 million food budget ($200,000) to purchasing locally produced and processed food.
